The House on Harbor Lane

Chapter 1 · 2 min read · Isabel Rowan

Rain greeted Sophie Hart at the town limits like an old acquaintance determined to make an impression. It ran down the windscreen in silver ribbons and blurred the roadside sign welcoming travelers to Bellweather Bay. She had promised herself she would return only for three days.

The house on Harbor Lane looked smaller than it did in her memories. The blue shutters needed paint. The front garden had grown wild with rosemary and salt grass. But the brass doorbell still gave the same delicate, apologetic ring.

Sophie stood on the porch with a suitcase, waiting for the courage to turn a key she had carried for eleven years. Across the low stone wall, someone was arranging buckets of flowers outside the neighboring shop.

“The lock sticks when it rains.” She knew the voice before she turned. Noah Mercer had more lines around his eyes than the last time she saw him, but he still spoke with the careful calm of someone afraid to startle a bird.

“Noah,” she said. It was a ridiculous reply for a decade of absence. He wiped his hands on his apron and crossed the garden with a small brass oilcan. Neither of them mentioned the train station or the letter Sophie had never answered.

He knelt beside the lock and worked it free in moments. “There,” he said. “It still remembers you.” Sophie smiled despite herself. “Do you say that to all the doors?”

Inside, everything smelled of cedar and dust. A faded quilt lay folded on the sofa. Her mother’s piano waited against the bay window, its polished wood reflecting a light that had not belonged to the room for years.

Noah saw her looking at it. “I had it tuned every spring,” he said. Sophie turned so abruptly that her suitcase toppled. “Why would you do that?” He met her eyes for a moment, then looked away.

“Someone should have kept it ready.”
