September Never Came
Chapter 1 · 1 min read · Amelia Parks
The calendar in the kitchen said August thirty-first for the fourth morning in a row. Daisy checked it twice, then looked out at the same yellow school bus passing the same cracked mailbox.
At first she had blamed her mother, who liked practical jokes and collected old calendars. But a practical joke could not explain why yesterday’s scratched knee was perfectly healed.
She called her best friend Milo. “Did you have the dream again?” he asked before she could speak. She stared at the phone. “You mean it is happening to you too?”
By breakfast, Daisy, Milo and Juniper were sitting on the cliff overlooking Lake Arden. The sunlight glittered in an identical pattern to the day before.
Juniper opened her notebook. On the first page she had written: Things That Might Break Time. Beneath it were three numbered possibilities and an uncertain drawing of a door.
“I vote for the door,” Daisy said. “We have tried everything else.” Far below, the lake made a sound like a clock beginning to tick.
