The Cartographer of Small Things
Chapter 1 · 1 min read · Theo Mercer
Oliver Finch made maps of places he had never visited. He knew the angle of the river at Millford, the number of bridges in Delamere and the precise distance between the capital and the sea. He had seen none of them.
His world ended at the green gate outside his father’s bookshop. Beyond it, panic took hold of his lungs until he could no longer count the paving stones.
On a quiet Thursday, a book arrived with no title and no return address. Its pages were blank except for a narrow road inked into the lower margin.
When Oliver tilted the book, the road moved. A tiny carriage rolled from one corner of the page to the other and disappeared through the crease.
He was still staring when a woman in a red coat walked into the shop, picked up the book and said, “I believe you have my country.”
Oliver held the cover closed. “Countries are not the sort of things we normally accept as returns,” he replied.
